Types of Carpet Construction

Berber/Loop

Berber carpet, also called loop carpet, is made from uncut yarn. This carpet construction is designed to be durable, even when used in high-traffic areas. 

This type of carpet is often referred to simply as “loop” carpet when the loops are all the same length and individual loops can be seen.This carpet is more likely to be called “berber” when it is made of a heavy, bulky yarn. 

Keep in mind that this type of carpet comes with visible seams, so you may not want to use it on stairs. Likewise, some pet owners may have trouble with berber/loop carpet, as pets may get their toenails stuck in the yarn. 

Suitable for: A casual look, active rooms with high traffic, homeowners who prefer to limit maintenance.

Cable

Cable carpet is made of yarn cut in a variety of lengths, creating a twisty, thick finish. It is soft on the feet, but it tends to crush when used frequently. For this reason, it is not generally recommended for high-traffic spaces, stairs, or hallways.

Patterned / Cut & Loop

Patterned or cut-and-loop carpet combines both uncut and cut loops to create a variety of textures and patterns. Saxony

Twist/Frieze

Twist or frieze carpet is composed of tight twists bending away from each other. This carpet construction is highly durable and appears textured on the surface. It is a common choice among commercial and residential customers, as it hides footprints and stains well. 

Suitable for: Contemporary spaces, homes with pets and children, high-traffic areas, and commercial buildings 

Carpeting Materials

Nylon

Nylon carpet fibers are strong but soft. They are resistant to fades and crushing, and they show color well. For customers with high-traffic areas prone to stains, Nylon 6 fibers are often recommended. Although more resistant, these fibers are engineered to stand up to wear and tear.  

Polypropylene (Olefin)

Polypropylene carpet is resistant to fading, stains, moisture, and even cleaning agents. Color is added to the fiber during the production process, which means it is less likely to be compromised later. This type of fiber can be used in virtually any location, including both indoors and outdoors. 

Polyester (PET)

Polyester carpet fibers are made from recycled products. They can perform as well as nylon and are stronger than polypropylene fibers. In addition, polyester is available at a lower cost. It holds color well, and it is resistant to abrasions, stains, and fading. Polyester carpet fibers are easy to clean and are environmentally friendly. 

Wool

Wool was the original fiber used to make carpet. It is durable, yet it feels soft and luxurious on the feet. Wool is highly resistant to oil-based stains, dust and dirt. It is also resistant to crushing, even in areas with high-traffic. Because wool carpet fibers come from a renewable resource, this carpet is considered environmentally friendly as well. However, wool is the most expensive carpet fiber on the market and is often reserved for area rugs and luxury flooring.

Advanced nylons or branded fibers are fibers that come with a specific brand name. Branded fibers are manufactured based on a strict set of standards, which typically leads to better performance and stain resistance, as well as other benefits.
